No family available to be my trusted companion: what to do?

You have no obvious person to designate — no child nearby, a scattered family, relatives already overwhelmed, or simply no one. This is more common than you might think, and there are concrete solutions.

1A situation that is far from exceptional

Being isolated with no children, widowed with relatives living far away, a family caregiver already at breaking point, a family rift: the reasons for not having an "obvious candidate" for this role are many, and none of them are your fault. Not having someone on hand doesn't mean you have to give up on being supported at a medical appointment, a hospital stay, or an administrative procedure.

2Who can be designated, besides family?

The law (article L1111-6 of the French Public Health Code) does not require a family relationship. You can designate:

But be careful: these people need to be genuinely available — geographically and time-wise. A designation "on paper" that can never actually be called on the day you need it doesn't help anyone. See the full guide to designating one.

3And if truly no one is available?

This is where independent professional support makes real sense: someone who joins you at appointments, understands your file, asks the doctor the right questions, keeps a written record, and stays reachable in an emergency — without placing that responsibility on a relative who is already fragile or too far away.

This is not a medical procedure, nor standard home help: it's a human presence and a watchful eye, adapted to the moments when you need it most — a one-off appointment, regular follow-up, or simple remote monitoring for peace of mind.

4How it's set up

In Châteauroux and the Indre department, this support is provided in person for appointments and hospital stays; remote monitoring, on the other hand, works wherever you are in France.
